It hosted concerts by artists such as Muddy Waters, Frank Zappa, Joni Mitchell, and Jesse Winchester. The New Penelope became a beloved hangout for young people. The club was located in the district that was once called Village du Carré Saint-Louis, sometimes referred to today as Milton-Park. This is where the city’s new counterculture and arts scene were emerging.

Despite the club only being open for a short time, it is legendary in Montreal’s nightlife and music history. Years later, many people still vividly remember the excitement of seeing shows there.

Now, over 50 years since The New Penelope closed for good, the time has come to tell its story and to reflect on its legacy. This online exhibit is a labour of love carried out by ARCMTL. The project is supported by the wider community of The New Penelope’s friends and fans.

Iconic poster advertising The Sidetrack at The New Penelope, June 21 – September 3, 1967

You can now discover stories about The New Penelope through the photos, videos, old posters and newspaper clippings shown here.
