The Military traditions of yesterday, today and tomorrow are kept alive in Fort Saskatchewan by continually acknowledging our heritage.

In 2004, the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadian) were granted the freedom of the city, representative of how closely their history is tied to the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

With drums beating, bayonets fixed and colours flying the Lord Strathcona's Horse march through Fort Saskatchewan in recognition of being granted the "Freedom of the City".

The event honours the Canadian Armed Forces unit which is already affiliated with the City of
Fort Saskatchewan.

Lord Strathcona's Horse and Fort Saskatchewan share a common heritage in that both were founded Sergeant-Major Sam Steele.

Steele also later recruited a force under Lord Strathcona's banner for the war in South Africa a
century ago. He was also the first commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse.

The roots of Sergeant-Major Sam Steele, Inspector Jarvis and Inspector Griesbach are evident in local and regional landmarks for future generations to view.
