Andrew Nulukie [b. 1975]

His story
Born and raised in Inukjuak, Andrew Nulukie learned to carve when he was a teenager, by watching his uncle Thomassie Echalook. But it wasn't until 2003 that he began to be serious about artmaking. The turning point was his having won a contest organized that year by La Fédération Coopératives du Nouveau-Québec (FCNQ) to see who among the young carvers in Nunavik could carve the best face. He continues to work in his uncle's workshop, where the two often collaborate on carvings. He has also taken up jewellery-making and printmaking. After attending a Makivik Jewellery Workshop in Salluit, he was instrumental in setting up a jewellery studio in Inukjuak. It is expected to open in 2009.

His art
During an interview with Inuit Art Foundation staff in Inukjuak in 2009, Andrew Nulukie said he approaches artmaking with ease, using a variety of materials. "I get materials from anywhere because I can carve any kind of material, even antler and ivory."
