In May 1908, Canadian Pacific applied black paint to the top of the smoke stacks of its ships, to give them a neater appearance. The top of the smoke stacks is blackened by the soot of coal combustion smoke.

In May 1908, Canadian Pacific, the ship's owner, decided to paint the tops of the smoke stacks black. This card illustrates the ship before May 1908, although the back is stamped January 4, 1909.
