Civic Life and Duty

The Civic category includes both those who held public office, and those who contributed in a significant way through work and volunteerism. As Ann Shipley's children will tell you, she had a presence that extended beyond the family as she was involved in politics and many committees at the local level and beyond. Millie Baird was another councilwoman who would go the distance for her constituents in an effort to bring essential services to the Chaput Hughes area at the west end of Kirkland Lake.

Enriching a community comes in many forms. The women featured in this section were a part of a number of organizations and causes that led to better living conditions for many residents, and the creation of services that made growing up and living in Kirkland Lake an experience that could not be found in many other Northern communities.
