In 1902, the Bamfield Cable Station was completed. Cable Station was in operation until 1959. The building, designed by Rattenbury, was intentionally burnt down in 1965 after it was determined that there were no funds for its upkeep. In 1972, five western universities formed a marine biological station here, utliizing the circa1926 concrete building that had been part of the cable station. It is still in operation today as the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.
