"Along both sides of the highway, Main Street consisted of a boarding house, beauty parlor, barber shop, pool hall, shoe repair business, theater, a meat market, two service stations, McFarland's lumber yard, a Hudson's Bay Co. mail order office, a Jenkin's Groceteria, a privately owned grocery establishment, machine repair shops, a Women's Institute, a dentist's office, and a movie theatre. I'm sure I've forgotten several other businesses. I particularly remember the floor in the meat market constantly sprinkled with fresh sawdust. It was here we purchased blocks of ice to preserve food stored in our ice box."

"However, the most frequented retail outlet was 'Lemans' - It included a soda fountain, pharmaceutical product needs, and a magazine section. A section of this shop accommodated the Post Office. After school, if the owner was in the Post Office, we would attack the comic book stand to glance through the latest edition of Superman, Batman, or the Green Hornet. We hastily retreated when the counter girl (our friend) informed us the 'Boss' was returning."
