"You never knew who was getting on or getting off." Les and Ed reminisce about the passenger trains passing through Revelstoke. Imagine sitting in the sun, on a bench in front of the station, waiting for the train. The demolishment of the iconic Revelstoke brick train station in 1978 heralded the end of regular passenger service on this line.

A resident of Revelstoke since 1968, Ken reflects on the role the railway plays in this interior town. Located in the only inland temperate rainforest in the world, Revelstoke is renowned for its high snowfalls and long winters. Ken shares one particularly tough day in February 1969, the last day he ever regretted living in Revelstoke. How long is the winter where you live? Do you count your snowfall in meters?

Historically, the railway opened the door to Revelstoke, the only way to reach this mountain community in earlier winters. A diversified economy followed as other industries developed like tourism, forestry and hydroelectric dams. Listen to retired railroaders reconstruct the route of an epic journey made by the generator runner for the Mica Dam. Built in Japan, this massive turbine made its way through the British Columbia interior by barge and rail. Can you imagine seeing this flatcar with its huge cargo going by?

Communities in the interior of British Columbia owe much of their development to the Canadian Pacific Railway and its workers. Specially designed flat cars brought specialized equipment for industry and in the process contributed to economic growth. As the Coffee Club remembers working on these trains, you can hear the details of first hand experiences.
