In the 1861 census Edward Patterson is listed as a labourer. Likely with the aid of John Frost, he purchased lot #8SDR. The historical record locates Edward Patterson on the Durham Road and in Owen Sound. In various documents he is listed as a labourer, hostler, stagecoach driver, farmer and a lay preacher.

When slavery was abolished in Upper Canada in 1793, freed Blacks and their descendents began coming to Canada. Many came as United Empire Loyalists during the American Revolution and many fought on the side of the British in the War of 1812. These immigrants established a number of settlements; among them was Priceville, just west of Flesherton. In the 1851 census almost every 50-acre lot along the Old Durham Road was settled by a Black family with the parents stating their birthplace as U.S. and children as old as 17, giving Canada as their birthplace.

The Schoolhouse
In 1865, one-half acre of the Black family lot was severed for School No. 7. The previous year the average attendance had been 46 for Miss Margaret Laidlaw, teacher. The school is still in the same location but is now a residence.

In 1970, the municipality (Artemesia Township) closed the portion of the Old Durham Road that fronted the Pattersons' property. Since that time, the single lane gravel road has slowly grown over.
