The University of Montreal resides in Montreal and they started playing collegiate football in the 1966 season as a member of Ontario Intercollegiate Football Conference (OIFC). The other teams in the conference at that time were Carleton University, Laurentian University, Loyola College, and McMaster just to name a few.

Montreal played in that conference for one season until the Central Canada Intercollegiate Football Conference (CCIFC) was created out of some other defunct conferences. This CCIFC was spilt up into two divisions. Montreal was part of the East division which consisted of Bishop's University, Sir George Williams University (SGW), Loyola College, Macdonald College, and Royal Military College. Montreal played in the CCIFC until the 1970 season.

In 1971, Montreal decided to go to the Quebec University Athletic Association (QUAA) in which Montreal only lasted for that single season. Following the 1971 season, Montreal among other universities in Quebec decided that a change in philosophy was at hand. Montreal decided that they will place more of an emphasis on involvement with the community and intramural sports.

With that shift in the school's philosophy, the football program was dropped, and it was not revived in 2002 when there was another shift in philosophy. This time, the university believed that they should now put an emphasis on intercollegiate sports, and with that the Montreal Carabins football program was reborn. In the first season, the Carabins finished conference play with a 0-8 record. From 2003-on, Montreal became one of the elite teams in the RESQ conference. After the 0-8 start, the Carabins are a combined 51-31 in the regular season. With that regular season success, the Carabins could not make a far run in the playoffs. The farthest that Montreal went was during the 2011 season, when Montreal went to their fourth Dunsmore Cup in their school history when the Carabins played against Laval. Much like their previous Dunsmore Cup which was all against Laval, the Carabins lost the Dunsmore Cup rematch 30-7.
