A.A. Brooke spent a lifetime painting. He sketched and painted wherever he lived, often mentally revisiting scenes years later. Many images were painted from memory, photographs, and drawings. Ingeniously, Brooke also painted paintings within paintings as he recorded the next scene.

This image shows the adult Brooke sons Harold, Ralph, and Ernest admiring their newborn sister, Ruth, in 1921. Note the Swiss landscape watercolours on the walls. Brooke’s early life in Switzerland continued to influence him into the 1950s.
