According to an exhibit organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in 1980, Charles Macdonald's works "by and large fall into the school of "Sunday" painting". They are put forward as one dimension of a man whose life centered on self-sufficiency and self-teaching, whether as an engineer in concrete or as a poetic respondent to his native landscape in the more manageable material of pigment. These works continue our awareness of an unusual "common man", whose mode of expression was the miniature, whether by its impressionist style or organic scale"
Others have suggested that "Macdonald's paintings also have historical value in addition to their artistic interest. Paintings like "Port Lorne on the Fundy Shore" and "Chipman Brook" provide a useful visual record of what many small Nova Scotian towns looked like before their docks fell to ruin and their roads were paved."
