Charles Macdonald's first trip took him to Santos, Brazil, from where he wrote his mother "Have got a big sketchbook nearley full of ships and sunrises, fishes, whales, birds and people." Indeed, he had plenty of time to sketch because the trip took seven weeks, two of which were spent becalmed near the equator.
"Sailed from New York May 6, 1898for Santos, Brazil on barque Francis S. Hampshire."
