The depression caused a slow-down in the concrete business. Charlie's socialist leanings allowed for a rainy day fund so that his men might continue to work and be paid. Between 1934 and 1938, they built a community of five cottages at Huntington Point , on the Bay of Fundy, where he and Mabel had camped since 1919. It was a way for him to experiment with concrete. Without any plans or formal engineering, they made it up as they went, using beach stone, reinforced concrete, brick and logs to create variations in form and colour as he had seen in his travels. In 1941, a visitor to Huntington Point wrote that the cottages looked like the sort of houses "in which Snow White and her Seven Dwarfs might have lived". He was also happy to share his seaside getaway with visitors and honeymooners and his notes indicate that stays at his "Canadian Youth Hostel" generated a modest fee to help with expenses, an activity that continues today.
