As a school boy, Charlie developed an interest in drawing and sketching and found that teachers did not appreciate his talents in the classroom. At age 15, He left school and went to work at the Woodman's Coffin Factory, and then at the Nova Scotia Carriage Company where he served as an apprentice to wheel wrights and wagon makers. As a carpenter's apprentice he earned twenty five dollars with one vacation day per year. Charlie "fooled around" after leaving the carriage company and did odd jobs in shipbuilding. In his diary, he claims he never missed a launching if he could help it. He continued with his drawing and watercolours, realizing that he could never afford a formal education in art. "One day I watched one of those ships slip into the water and I decided to go to sea myself and do some travelling".
