ART GALLERY OF ALGOMA

The Art Gallery of Algoma was founded as a non-profit public institution in 1974 by a group of art enthusiasts from Sault Ste. Marie. Two years later this new Northern Ontario cultural institution was hosting exhibitions in a space provided by the Algoma Central Railway. In 1980 the Gallery relocated to a new 10,000 sq. ft. purpose-built facility on the St. Mary's River, which included a principal exhibition room, a multi-purpose room, an education studio, and a vault. Michael Burtch served as Director-Curator of the Gallery from 1981 to 2008, during which time he developed exhibitions of regional consequence and a permanent collection of international significance.

In recent years the Gallery's Board of Directors hired Dr. Curtis Collins as Director, who boldly moved the institution's facility and programming forward. The 30 year old carpeted floors and walls throughout the building were replaced with wood and drywall surfaces, while the exhibition areas were re-designated as the Main Gallery, Project Room and Education Gallery. Such physical changes have been matched by a refocused programming effort intended to attract a broader local audience and establish a greater province and nation-wide identity for the Gallery. Contemporary and historic art exhibitions are now mounted in a consistently professional manner and the Gallery's new opening reception format is attracting more visitors as well as media attention.

The Main Gallery serves as the Art Gallery of Algoma's feature space and it is now committed exclusively to works by professional artists from across Canada. The Project Room affords emerging regional artists an opportunity to develop their practices, while the Education Gallery caters to student art projects from the Algoma district. A new artist fee structure is being implemented based on CARFAC rates, which extends from a larger organizational initiative to bring the Gallery's programming as a whole in-line with professionally established standards.
