Post-War Period

Following WWII, 4 Field Ambulance along with the rest of the Canadian Forces would undergo several changes. After the Korean War, in which some unit members would participate, in 1954 the unit was renamed 17 (Fort William) Medical Company. In 1965, the unit became a sub-unit of the Lakehead Service Battalion. Five years later, when the Lakehead Service Battalion was disbanded, the medical section moved to 138 Company RCASC (Royal Canadian Army Service Corp). On activation of 17 Service Battalion in 1973, the sub-unit continued as part of the Service Battalion until given a separate identity. 1975 would see the Medical Services reformed as their own unit and named 18 Medical Company. The unit would continue under this name until the formation of the Canadian Forces Medical Service in 2004, under which they were renamed 18 Field Ambulance.

While these changes were taking place, the unit kept up training and assisted in civil defence exercises. Throughout this period, members of the unit would provide support in all major conflicts including Korea, Bosnia, and Afghanistan.
