"The 14 years that have passed since the plaque was erected on the beachfront esplanade have been harsh on the small monument. Its concrete base has started to crumble. Vandals have defamed it with graffiti, as they have to other nearby landmarks of war, and repeatedly stolen the Essex Scottish cap badge from its place."

There was pitting of the metal from wind, weather and salt.
"After consulting with the veterans,it was decided the best solution would be to replace the memorial with a more fitting -and more resilient -new monument."

In fact, shortly after the badge was replaced on the memorial, the group visited other memorials along the esplanade and returned to find the badge had been taken again.
