Montreal was an important stop on the North American circuit for jazz musicians. The fact that the Berliner company was here (later acquired by RCA Victor), played an important role in spreading awareness of jazz. The studios caught the hottest of the Canadian and American swing "big bands". Oscar Peterson also recorded in the RCA Victor studios.

Justin Time manager Jim West heard Oliver Jones play a fabulous concert and as a result decided to establish a record label devoted exclusively to jazz. Like the organizers of the famous International Jazz Festival, he believed in the potential of jazz to bring people together. 20 years later, Justin Time had become a bulwark in the dissemination of jazz. Famous Canadian and American artists graced the label's catalogue.
