THE PRAIRIE TRAIL
By: Elizabeth Struthers

Brown-eyed Susan
On Prairie sod
And spear grass
On which to trod.

False dandelions
Bluebells and Alexander
Asters and Breadroot
Where we meander.

Big Blue Stem
And little star flowers
butterflies flitting
Amongst their bowers.

By the tall cord grass
Limbs are caressed
And touched by others
While souls are blessed.

On a round haycock
Sits an Upland Plover
As high overhead
Soft, story clouds hover.

Killdeers are crying
Around lowing cattle
Little calves sucking
And blackbirds prattle.

How the buffalo fared
Is plain to see now
On the finest of grasses
Before the plow.

Mud-caked boots
And the prairie rose
Purple and white clover
Touch the nose.

Fancies ranging
Two elderly ladies dining
Enjoying their outing
Faces shining

A cup of tea
And Cracker Jack
A grilled cheese sandwich
And it's time to come back.

Sun shining
Socks drying
Love reaching
Wind sighing.
