The number of horses required to pull the grain depended on a few factors. Under normal conditions, two horses usually pulled the wagon. If the town was uphill, or if the ground was soft or muddy, more horses would share the load.

When the farmer got to town with his wagon load of grain, he headed for the elevator. He drove the horses and wagon right in through the large doors onto the weigh scale. The elevator agent calculated the weight of the grain before it was shovelled off, into a grate covered hole in the floor of the scale. It ended up in a hopper under the weigh scale, where it was elevated to a pre-selected compartment higher up in the elevator. The elevator agent stored and mixed grades of grain before it was loaded into box cars and taken by rail to Moose Jaw and beyond.
