Overlooking the harbour on a spot near the southeast corner of the building known as Bartlett's Landing stands a rough hewn granite monument erected in 1948 to honor the memory of Captain Bob Bartlett. The profile of the captain is seen in bas relief on the bronze tablet set in the upper portion of this memorial and is the work of James R. Ewing, a prominent Newfoundland sculptor. In 1949 Robert Ayre, editor of 'Canadian Art', spoke of this particular piece of Ewing artwork as "impressive in its native simplicity and dignity."

This monument and project was made possible by contributions to a fund sponsored by the 'Evening Telegram' and recorded in its columns. The unveiling of the monument was made by two former long-time members of Captain Bob's crew, William Pritchard and James Dooling, while the tribute was voiced by R. B. Herder, the then president and publisher of the 'Evening
Telegram'.
