When the first settlers arrived in 1808 Kingsboro (also spelled Kingsborough), Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the area was known as West River.

During 1823, desiring to organize a local house of worship, Mrs. John Kennedy and Mrs. James MacDonald walked a distance of fifty miles to seek the support of a preacher of the Gospel. They traveled through virgin wilderness experiencing storms and other dangers of wilderness travel. They returned with Rev. Crawford who discovered the people had a hunger for God's message. He began preaching and lives were immediately changed. Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. MacDonald were the first to receive Christ as their Lord and Saviour and were baptized in the South Lake. Although this first body of believers did not identify themselves as Baptists they were following Baptist tradition of baptizing by immersion.

It was not until 1832 that steps were taken to construct a house of worship. Until that time the residents of the Kingsboro area met in homes of the believers and when weather permitted, the services were held in the open area of fields and woodlands. Construction took a year and a half as the settlers had little spare time from their primary function of struggling for a livelihood from farming and fishing.

This first church building had the seating arranged so that the women and children sat on one side and the men on the other. It was a noteworthy day when a young boy was old enough to move from his mother's seat to sit on the men's side.

In the summer of 1843 the Gaelic people, who could speak little English, requested that the services also be conducted in Gaelic. The necessary arrangements were made and the services were held in Gaelic.

And the little church continued to grow in numbers and spiritual maturity.

On February 21, 1864 a new building was dedicated to replace the first building. The new building was 33 feet by 48 feet in size. The gallery (balcony) was removed in 1879 and a tower was built. A spire was added to the top of the tower that could be seen from far and wide upon land or sea. The first church building was moved a half-mile westward and transformed into a public school.

The Kingsboro Church was located on the south side of the island. A meeting house was built at North Lake to provide for worship services and Sunday School. North Lake is about 4 kilometers from Kingsboro and as the name suggests is located on the north side of the island. The eastern tip of the island narrows to a point which is identified as East Point.

It is not known what happened to the North Lake meeting house. With the advent of motor cars and better roads the church members attended services at the Kingsboro church building. Today North Lake is better known as the "Tuna Fishing Capital" of the world. World records have been established with tuna weighing in at over 1,000 pounds.

The third church building was completed in 1903. The main highway had been changed to run along the seacoast about a half-mile to the south of the site of the old church. The new church building was constructed at the foot of the hill next to the relocated highway. Since it was built on a narrow plot of land the new parsonage was built almost directly behind the church. In the photo the parsonage can be seen behind the church and to the right of it. The parsonage was built sometime between 1919 and 1926 during the ministry of Rev. MacWalker
