Marystown Shipyard Limited is known as one of the best equipped and efficient ship building and repair facilities of its size on the eastern seaboard of North America.

In the mid-1960s a Quebec shipping company, Canadian Vickers, expressed an interest in establishing a facility to repair steel ships at Marystown. Construction of the yard began in 1966. When it started operations in 1967, its primary purpose was to build and service the ships engaged in the offshore fishing industry.

Over the years the shipyard has built a variety of ships, including: Multi Purpose Fishing Vessels, Harbour Tugs, Anchor Handling Tugs, Diving Support Vessels, Fisheries Patrol Ships, Car Ferries, Offshore Supply Vessels, Middle Distance Trawlers, Gillnetter/Seiners, Coast Guard Vessels, and Ship and Buoy Vessels.

To date, a total of 57 ships have been constructed at the shipyard.

Over the years, the current shipyard has had a number of different owners - and thus a number of different names:
- Newfoundland Marine Works Ltd. (1967-1973)
- Marystown Shipping Enterprises Ltd. (1974-1978)
- Marystown Shipyard Ltd. (1979-1997)
- Friede Goldman Ltd. (1998-2001)
- Kiewit Offshore Services (2002-present)
