The contract to provide refueling services for the transatlantic flights out of Botwood was awarded to Shell Aviation Service. A 15,000 gallon storage tank was built at Norris Arm from which a scow called "Oscar", christened by its owner, John Paul Getty, would transport the fuel in barrels to Botwood where some smaller storage facilities were constructed.
