Dr. Walter Templeman was born on February 6th, 1907 in Bonavista, Bonavista Bay to parents Levi and Emily (Harris) Templeman.

He went to grade school in his home town of St. John's, Newfoundland, and then moved to Nova Scotia to attend Dalhousie University. While there he studied medicine and in 1934 graduated with twin degrees of Medical Doctor and Master of Surgery.

Not long after finishing University, Dr. Templeman moved to Bell Island and set up his medical practice.

At the commencement of the Second World War, Dr. Templeman enlisted in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. From 1940 - 41, he supervised the medical examinations for the Royal Artillery and Royal Navy recruits. Following this, Dr. Templeman spent the remainder of the war years as Medical Officer to the Newfoundland Militia.
