Prior to 1897, the Martin International Trap Rock Company operated on a small scale, mining Nipissing diabase, more commonly known as 'trap rock'.
Most of the product from the Martin International Trap Rock Company was shipped to Cleveland for use in the making of the city's famous park roads.
