Maberly was first known as Muddy Brook. It was later renamed ‘Maberly' by Reverend Canon Bayly in 1905. It is uncertain why the name was changed to Maberly but some people speculate that it was in honor of a girl that Reverend Bayly had once known.

The first settlers of Muddy Brook came from Bonavista to fish from the rich fishing
grounds, and plant crops in the fertile soils. The people of Muddy Brook became fishermen,
farmers, hunters, and gathers. Muddy Brook shores were lined with stages and flakes to process the fish that was caught with hook and line from small boats.
