Flour Sack Clothing

As some parents could not afford new clothing each year when school started, many children had dresses, blouses, shirts, and underwear made from flour sacks. Girls wore long brown or black cotton stockings. Often they were kept up by rolling the top of the stocking over a piece of elastic (or if they had a skinny leg - Mom's sealer jar ring).I remember my mother making clothes and curtains from flour sacks that we had purchased at the James River store.

Underwear

One early teacher, a medical student from Nova Scotia, ran afoul of one parent by sending his children home because they weren't wearing underwear. The indignant father let the young Easterner know that he was lucky to afford outer clothing for his children, with no hope of providing the luxury of underwear!

Barefeet 1919

Times were hard and money was scarce. Children often went barefoot in the summer to save on shoe leather. When a hole was worn in the sole of a shoe - a stiff piece of cardboard was placed inside the sole to make it less painful to wear. A lot of rubber boots were worn, even on colder days, with a lining of heavy socks.
