The legend of Red Lake dates back thousands of years. According to Ojibway legend, two hunters came upon a very large moose beside a lake. Believing the beast to be the evil spirit Matchee Manitou, they attempted to kill it. Although wounded, the animal escaped by diving deep into the lake.
