Census Introduction

The following information was garnered from four different regional censuses conducted in 1831, 1861, 1871, and 1881. These archival documents provide the names of individuals residing in the various communities along the coast, their profession, and the number (and in some cases the names of all individuals residing in each household). A list has been developed of all the blacksmiths living and working on the Gaspe Coast recorded in each of these years. These records indicate that almost every town dotting the coast of the Gaspe Peninsula, no matter the size of the settlement, had their own blacksmith. As much information as possible has been included on each individual.
