Today this lone pine tree stands on the bank of the Exploits River as a vigil to the historic past when tall pine trees sheltered the Beothuk as they alone traveled up the river in autumn, down in the spring, the only inhabitants of what they called the Great Lake.

Around the shores of Red Indian Lake and in the river valleys of central Newfoundland was a stand of pine that for centuries protected the Beothuk in their winter encampments.

Those same pine trees that brought Lewis Miller to the shores of Red Indian Lake, never grew back, but logging operations still harvest the spruce and fir trees that replaced the pine trees which once dominated the skyline.

To the visitor the only visible record of the Beothuk having been here are two Mamateeks, reconstructed at Indian Point as a glimpse into Beothuk life and an information center introduces the visitor to the historic events that took place on the shores Red Indian Lake.

A smoke house reconstructed at the same location, show how the Beothuk cured their venison for food to last them until spring and for their trek down river when they returned to the coastal region of Newfoundland to hunt birds, eggs and fish.
