THE TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE at the entrance to Cape Breton Island in Port Hastings is the busiest provincial bureau as far as number of visitors every year in Nova Scotia. Built in 1939 near the car ferry wharf in Port Hawkesbury, it was moved to Port Hastings when the Causeway was opened. Additions have been added over the years.
Cape Porcupine quarry from which 10,200,000 tons of rock was blasted between 1952 and 1955 to construct the Canso Causeway looms on opposite shore.

ST. DAVID'S UNITED CHURCH continues to be a welcoming beacon to visitors crossing the Canso Causeway. It along with the Port Hastings Volunteer Fire Department, the Post Office, the Gut of Canso Museum and Archives and the Strait Regional School Board offices are the only public buildings to serve residents in this small community at the entrance to Cape Breton Island.
Friendly, caring people - it's a great place to live.

The GUT OF CANSO MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES (originally the Port Hastings Museum and Archives) was the first community museum established in the Strait area when it opened its doors in 1982. The Port Hastings Historical Society continues to preserve the history and genealogy of the Strait of Canso communities for residents and visitors to access an extensive collection of records and documents. Museum collections cover many aspects of pioneer life up to the present of the communities on both sides of the Strait of Canso, the challenges of making a living on the railroad and ferries, the impact of the construction of the Canso Causeway and the industries that have come and gone.
We're often complimented on the homey atmosphere we've created using interesting artifacts like stepdancer Don Riley's bronzed shoes, pioneer tools and household items. We look forward to your visit.
