While in North Sydney, the cable ship Colonia's Navigating Officer, L. Newton fell ill with acute appendicitis.

Taken ashore, Newton was transported to the Hamilton Hospital where he was operated on at once.

Despite the care and attention from the medical staff and the manager at the Western Union office, Mr. W.E. Earl, Newton died a fortnight after the ship left port.

The Hamilton Hospital was the first hospital in North Sydney. It opened on September 1, 1908.

In 1875 the Western Union constructed this building on the corner of Commercial Street and Union Street in North Sydney.

At its opening, it had a staff of 25 with W.S. Snyder, as its first superintendent.

By 1900 there were between 50 and 60 on staff. On any given day 2300 messages passed through the office.

Western Union Hotel

The Western Union Hotel opened in 1876 on Summer Street to accommodate those working at the newly established Western Union Office.

In 1901 the hotel was sold to Mrs. Catherine Harrington and renamed the Albert Hotel. It soon became one of the leading hotels in the community until it was destroyed by fire in the 1950's.
