A town market opened in 1933. With over one hundred farmers participating, the opening led to "many surprises in the size and quality of the fruit and vegetables grown in the disrict."

The construction of the Kenora highway was undertaken as a depression project, providing relief work. Completed in 1936, it opened up the area to the North and was known as the Heenan Highway.
