The small town of Alberton has been home to many noteworthy and some famous people.

Their backgrounds are as diverse as religious martyrs, incredibly wealthy fox ranchers, distinguished politicians, war heroes and at least one world class sportsman.

Reverend and Mrs. George Nicol Gordon

Reverend George N. Gordon and Reverend James D. Gordon were brothers from Alberton who became Presbyterian missionaries in the New Hebrides of the South Pacific.

In 1961 George and his wife were murdered by the indigenous population they sought to convert.

James volunteered to take their place.

In 1872 he was also murdered in Erromanga, New Hebrides.

Hon. George W. Howlan

The Hon. George W. Howlan was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from 1860-1873.

He was part of the delegation who negotiated the terms under which P.E.I. joined Confederation.

He was also appointed to the Senate in 1873, and later became Lt.-Govenor of P.E.I. in 1894.

The Hon. Benjamin Rogers was local businessman who also moved up the political ladder.

He served in the M.L.C., 1873-1893, as a M.L.A. from 1893-1906 and as Lt.-Govenor from 1910-1915.

Wendall Rogers was one of the leading air aces of WWI. He was a fighter pilot with the Royal Flying Corps.

Wendall was the first Allied airman to shoot down a German Gotha bomber and for this he was awarded the Military Cross.

He was credited with destroying ten enemy aircraft.

In 1929 he flew a sea plane from St. John, New Brunswick to Alberton to visit his parents. This made him the first person to pilot an aircraft to Alberton.

Hubert Rogers, the younger brother of Wendall, also served in France during WWI.

After the War he studied art and became a noted artist. He was commissioned to paint the "Men of Valour" series in the 1940s and also the painting of the 1943 Quebec Conference.

The Quebec Conference painting hangs in the National War Museum in Ottawa.
