Everyone or every family had some contact with prospecting. It was like a fever. At first, the silver mines of Cobalt created a world-wide excitement that brought in huge amounts of investment money into New Ontario. Every conceivable endeavour, business or profession benefited. Industries grew. The growth in the early decades of the 20th century was sustained by the development of the great gold mine of Porcupine (Timmins), Larder Lake and Kirkland Lake.

Like-wise, the farmer could clear his land slowly while working off the farm in the mining industry. The mining penny stocks could be found in cupboards for years after as most did not pay out or outright scams. In spite of this, the wealth flowed throughout the county.
