Over the years since Whistler's last official bid for the Olympics, the community has seen immense growth and development. The population has multiplied, the town has tripled in size with the addition of Phase Two and Village North developments, and many other amenities have been added such as a recreation facility, secondary school, cultural centre and a medical clinic.

As independently owned mountains during the 1980's and 90's, Whistler and Blackcomb cultivated a healthy rivalry while simultaneously succeeding on their own. For example, when Blackcomb expanded its terrain with the 'Seventh Heaven' ski lift, Whistler responded with the addition of the Peak Chair.

However, in March 1997, Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation, which owned Whistler Mountain, merged with Intrawest Corporation, which owned Blackcomb Mountain, to create one of the largest ski resorts in the world. As a team, the mountains were unstoppable and in the winter of 1999 - 2000, Whistler hosted a record number of two million skier visits!
