Olds' first "real" hospital in a sense, was a one-story house in the southeast corner of town, run by a partially trained nurse, Mrs. Ptias. During an outbreak of typhoid fever in 1910, Mrs. Ptias succeeded in keeping many patients alive through their prolonged illness.

1912 - 1920. Many "hospitals" of this nature sprang up around Olds during this period and the fact that some minor surgeries could be done in town saved people the half-day train ride to the Calgary Hospital. One of these "hospitals" was a larger place known as the McDonald house. It was here where Dr. Hartman and Dr. Steven's joined forces and practiced collective medicine, until the First World War called Dr. Stevens into service.
