Jane (nee Hinton) Lockett was born in 1965 and raised in Peterborough. When she was born the family lived on Manning Avenue in the North End of Peterborough. They lived on Manning Ave. for about 3 years after she was born. When the house became too small for the family (Jane has an older brother), her parents bought a bigger house one street over on O'Carroll Avenue where they lived for 17 years. Jane was 19 years old and attending university when her parents sold this house and bought an old Victorian house on Stewart Street.

When asked what were her parents' expectations of her regarding work and school Jane said that believes her parents had expectations for herself and her brother. They wanted them to get a post secondary education, either college or university. Jane did both.

She struggled with math all through high school and her parents were ‘great' and got her a tutor to help her with math once or twice a week. Sometimes she had to go to summer school. She struggled with math but stuck with it because she knew that her parents wanted her to go on and she knew that it was important for her to get a college or university education to get a good job. She worked hard and made sure that she passed.

Jane really believes her parents would have done anything to help her get through school so she could get a post secondary education. They would have discouraged the idea of quitting to get a job. Her father was a veterinarian and her mom had a university degree as well.

All through elementary and secondary school Jane walked to school from her O'Carroll Street home. For elementary school she attended Queen Elizabeth Public School and for high school she went to Adam Scott Collegiate. After graduating from high school she stayed in Peterborough because she knew that she could live at home and go to Trent University.

The Hinton family spent a lot of time at their cottage on Chemong Lake. It is only a short 15 minute drive north of Peterborough. She was about 2 or 3 years old when her parents bought the cottage. They would move out there every summer once school was finished and they would live at the cottage until Labour Day when it was time for school to start again. Jane recalls it was a great time and her favourite place to go in the summers and the fall. She always invited friends out for sleepovers and she would go to their cottages to do the same.

Now her own children love going out to her parents' cottage Jane says it is so great that she can share that experience with her own children. They live close enough that they can drive out after supper in the summer and they keep a boat there.

Jane rode horses for many years and went to a summer camp at Saddlewood Equestrian Centre in Bethany, right near the ski hill. She rode there from the age of 7 to around 15.

She's not sure how she became so interested in horses. She never knew anyone personally who owned a horse. This place had just opened up and there was a school bus that would pick horseback riders up around the city of Peterborough and take them out to Saddlewood. They would ride all day on Saturdays and then the bus would drop them off at home at the end of the day. In the summer they had a two week summer camp and she went to it for four years. Campers stayed there for two weeks and would have riding lessons, learn to swim, have campfires, make crafts. Jane loved horses, and she still does but doesn't do much riding anymore.

In her neighbourhood when she was growing up Jane's best friend lived two streets from her and they were practically inseparable. They walked to school together, went all through public school and high school together, and spent a lot of time together. They shared a lot of mutual friends who also lived in the north end.

Jane mainly hung out with girls, but she had a boyfriend all through high school although she didn't spend a lot of time hanging out with her boyfriend's friends. They were all in the same grade together and they all knew each other really well and got along so they would go to parties and dances together.

Jane's recalls her favourite places to visit in Peterborough as a child. She loved to go shopping downtown. She says "the 1980s those were the ‘boom years' and there were a lot of great places to shop". As a teenager she spent a lot of time downtown at the mall. [Historic note: In the early 1970s the face of the city began to change. Two blocks of the downtown were leveled to make way for Peterborough Square. The downtown mall opened in 1975.]

When she was in high school she joined a ski club. There night skiing available so they would go out on a bus after school and they would get a ski lesson. This was a school-run activity.

Jane loved downhill skiing so she spent a lot of time out at Devil's Elbow in Bethany. The ski hill was about a half hour drive to the west of Peterborough so she usually borrowed one of the family cars. Her brother was also an avid skier so they sometimes went together or she went with her friend Janice who was the one who got her into downhill skiing when she was about 15 years old. Her boyfriend and his friends also skied out there, and it was a favourite hangout on weekends and holidays.
