Her father was a Home Boy and they don't know anything about his birth parents.

Her mother's family came from Yorkshire. Her grandmother came out to Canada with her mother and uncle in 1904. Apparently she was being courted by Betty's grandfather back in Holmfirth, Yorkshire and he didn't meet with Betty's great-grandmother's approval. Betty's great-grandmother brought her daughter to the Keene area in hopes of splitting them up and Betty's grandfather followed them to Canada a few months later. They were married at St. John's Anglican Church in Peterborough in 1905.

Betty's grandfather was a restless man with a hot temper and she thinks he was let go from a lot of positions, moving from job to job. He worked on the trains (he had worked on the trains in England) as a conductor or in the station when he first arrived in Canada. He also worked at de Laval and was a bookkeeper and he did the books for a number of businesses in Peterborough.

Betty's grandparents bought a number of houses and converted them into apartments as a source of income. The first place Betty lived as a child was one of those apartments on Reid Street right near the 5-street junction at Sherbrooke Street. Her family was only there for a short time and then they moved to 193 Aylmer Street. Betty and her parents lived in the back apartment and her grandparents lived in the front apartment. On June 5, 1944 she moved with her parents to Engleburn Avenue which was known as Dale Avenue at that time. Her parents continued to live there until approximately 1972. Betty lived at home until she was married except for her university years. She graduated from high school in 1954 and was married in 1959. During those years she was away at university, returning home for the summers, and after graduation teaching.

Betty was the first one in the Peterborough branch of her family to go to university but doesn't recall ever being pushed or forced, she guesses this was because she enjoyed school and did well – university seemed to be the next logical step. Betty's mother went as far as grade 10 and then went to Business College. She worked in a lawyer's office until she got married. Her father finished school at 14. He was a lay reader at church when he was in his 40s and preached excellent sermons. People told him he should go into the ministry but he didn't because he felt he didn't have enough schooling.
