TRANSPORTATION - WAGONS

Wagons of every size and type were used in pioneer Ontario. Some of those models in this collection include those pictured - a bob sleigh with two logs, an oxcart, farm wagon, and also a buckboard on the right. The lumbermen would seek out white pine that had not been harvested in the "first cut" by the timber companies. It is recorded that McCrea made the model of the ox-cart from a daguerreotype of 1836 of such a cart.

OX CART

Oxen were used in pioneer Ontario although seldom seen today. They were a hardy and strong team to haul logs and perform tasks on the pioneer farm. A variety of wagons were made to be hauled by oxen from a simple one as shown to heavy long wagons requiring a pair of oxen. Often the settler would make wagons from used wood. These tended to be smaller wagons for garden use.

BUCKBOARD

The family vehicle for transportation was the buckboard. It was drawn by a horse and provided a less than smooth ride over most pioneer roads. The large wheels were wooden with steel rims. The seats were fastened onto what was termed an "elastic board" which was securely fastened to the rear axle and front bolster. Later the horse drawn buggy became common and fewer buckboards were seen. However many pioneer families continued to rely on this method of transportation .
