Constable Dent arrived at the railway station a few minutes later, in uniform (against Norman Edwards' advice), armed with his standard issue .38 calibre police pistol.

Upon entering the station he saw the man, just as Edwards had described him, sitting alone on a bench with his packsack beside him at the west end of the waiting room. Dent approached the man and asked him his name. "Scott" was what he heard the man say.
