Herbert CPR Train Station Story

On Saturday, October 14, 1882 the CPR railroad reached "Siding 14" (480.3 miles west of Winnipeg). Before the first regular train service on December 10, 1882 the siding had been named "Herbert" after Sir Michael Henry Herbert, an English diplomat.

The siding car that had been used as a train station burnt down in 1908 and this new impressive station was built to replace it.

CPR had placed the station boxcar at this location calling it Siding 14. By 1908 the town of Herbert had grown so much that CPR felt it needed a large station to meet the demands of the people and businesses.

Looking from the station rooftop the fully developed beautiful garden is now visible. We have not been able to confirm the story that Herbert's CPR Station won an award for the best garden on this train line.

Many photos were taken here in the early years and it is obvious the community enjoyed the garden.
