In 1999 a group of Royal Canadian Mounted Police members decided to renact the original march west of the force 125 years before. With volunteer, community and corporate support they rode from Manitoba to Alberta.

Fort Saskatchewan area resident and RCMP member Grant Little was the only person to ride the entire route, including the north march to Fort Saskatchewan. Thousands of people came out to watch at every community, but no crowd was more enthusiastic than the citizens of Fort Saskatchewan.

A new awareness of our history was kindled.

The Keepers of Peace and Preservation

7

A legacy of the 1999 March West celebration has been the creation of an improved mounted police history display at the Fort Saskatchewan Museum.

The Museum is also associated with a new group of riders formed by members of the 1999 March West that want to keep the spirit of the early North West Mounted Police alive.

The Alberta Historic Mounted Troop held their first parade in Fort Saskatchewan in 2002, and now are partners with the Museum at several events each summer.
