First Mass-Production PostersBasswood had been found the most suitable for this work because of its toughness and soft, close grain. .. The boards were planed to exactly the height of printing type and smoothly surfaced on one side for engraving.
We tried our first efforts on wood block engravings on the folk near home by producing a series of posters for sports days, picturing baseball players, horse races, athletic events, humorous scenes and so on. These were half sheets with the pictorial design covering the top half of the poster and were printed up in quantity and stored on shelves. (Excerpt from Paper, Pen and Ink by Andrew King, Pg 81-82)

As orders came in, the wording supplied for local events was printed in the blank space at the bottom. All type material used for this, including spacing, type lines, etc., was standardized to fit this space.There was enough uniformity in sports day poster copy even from different far-apart towns, that a skilled compositor and one pressman produced as many as a dozen orders in a day (one every 40 minutes), all the result of standardization and mass production.
