THE MINED HOUSE

Ruthless tactics

On December 27 a platoon from The Loyal Edmonton Regiment took control of a house and remained inside.

Unbeknownst to them, the Germans had rigged the house earlier with explosives. Once the Canadians were inside, the Germans detonated the charges.

Most of the men died on the spot. Four were dug out shortly after the explosion by troops who rushed to the rescue. A fifth was dug out three days later.

Troops from The Loyal Edmonton Regiment quickly retaliated. Discovering another building containing forty or fifty German troops, had army engineers rig explosives beneath it, then exploded the structure.
