Haileybury was founded in 1889 by Charles Cobbold Farr and named after the school he attended in England.

The settlement grew slowly, but its importance increased when silver was discovered in the neighbouring Town of Cobalt. Many wealthy mine owners and prospectors lived in Haileybury. At one time, Lakeshore Road, was known as Millionaire's Row in recognition of the 12 millionaires that lived on this one street.

Haileybury's prominence was solidified when it was declared the district town for Temiskaming in 1912.

Haileybury's importance was also displayed by it's hockey team. Both Haileybury and Cobalt had teams in the National Hockey Association (N.H.A.) until they folded in 1911 due to lack of funds. Art Ross played for Haileybury in 1910 and is seen in this photograph.
