Two Young Women

These two young women were very likely Mortimer sisters. It may have been Clara and one of her sisters. It is possibly a late19th or early 20th century photograph, as can be determined by the dress of the women.

Clara had at least five sisters: Mary Sophie Ann , Marion Kate, Elizabeth Ada, Victoria Beatrice, and Harriet. She also had brothers whose names were Alfred, Thomas, William, and Aubrey. These names were found on greeting cards sent to Clara and were in an album which she had received as a gift from Manoah Hawker on her eighteenth birthday. He wrote the first entry which is dated August,1891. They were married in August 1895.

Clara Mortimer was born in 1873 and was probably the youngest child of William James and Mary Ann Mortimer. Captain Mortimer drowned on the ship 'Glasshefty' on July 2, 1875.
During the years from 1916 to 1918 when Clara kept the diaries referred to in this archive, she frequently wrote of sending letters and gifts to her mother in North Dakota. Mary Ann Mortimer may have then been living with her daughter, Harriet, who was married to Ernest Maddock, also of Carbonear. Most of Clara's siblings had married and had moved to the United States of America. Correspondences were from Massachusetts, New York, and North Dakota.

A Family Portrait

This is probably a photograph of the Williams family. The woman on the right would have been Clara's sister, Beatrice, who had married Charles Williams of New York. There had been a daughter named Bess, so one of these young women may be that daughter.
The photograph was taken by Almsteadh, Portrait & Landscape Photographer of Tompkinsville, Staten Island. It may have been in the year 1900.

This archive has a letter which Clara had received from Fannie Williams. It was dated September 10th, 1917. The information contained in this letter from Mrs. Charles Williams of Stapleton, New York, would coincide with the fact that Beatrice had died and her husband had remarried. Evidently Clara had inquired of Fannie Williams as to where Bess was and what she was doing. Reading correspondences from Fannie, it would appear that Bess was not then living at home and did not often visit her father who was ill.

Written on the back of this photo: "To Aunt Clara from Gertie."
The young girl in this photograph is probably in her late teens and bears a striking resemblance to Mortimer Hawker, who would have been her cousin. It is possible that it is this young girl who went on to become a nurse and who died on March 29th, 1919.

The young nurse in this photograph is very like the young woman in another photo entered in this archive. It may well be 'Gertie'.
Written at the bottom of the photo is the note: "Gertrude my Beloved Daughter who fell asleep in Jesus. March 29/19. We shall meet."

The photograph is possibly of a daughter of one of Clara's siblings.
