William Charles Hawker was born in 1832 in the village of Bere Regis, Dorset, England.
Records show that Miss Fanny Hawker of Bere Regis wrote the firm of Pack, Fryer & Gosse, a firm in Poole, England, looking for a job for her nephew, William Charles Hawker.
The company wrote back offering him a job with the Carbonear, Newfoundland branch of their firm. William left the family farm and arrived in Carbonear in early December 1852. He was 20 years of age.

This formal photograph is of the two eldest of the Hawker children, Walter Charles (right) and Mortimer Leopold. This photo was probably taken in 1913, by E. Parsons, the photographer in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland.
After finishing his formal schooling in June, 1912, at the age of 16, Walter Hawker went to work at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Carbonear and worked there for two years before transferring to St. John's. This photograph may have been taken when Walter was working in Carbonear and prior to his having enlisted in the Newfoundland Regiment. In this photo Walter would have been about 17 years of age and Mortimer would have been 16.

This photograph is one of several in a collection of other Hawker family photos and documents found in an old brown suitcase. Written on the back of the photo are the words, "Frederick Hawker, age 4 years". Fred was born in 1902.

This photograph is of young volunteer soldiers of the Newfoundland Regiment prior to leaving to join their regiment overseas. The training grounds were an area around Quidi Vidi Lake, just on the outskirts of St. John's. The soldiers were housed in tents such as the one in this photo. Walter Hawker is third from the top of the group.

Clara wrote in her journal on April 22nd,1916: "We all went to Parsons' and had photograph taken."
Clara's "We" included Mortimer, Raymond, Ernest, Fred, and Beatrice. These are the only photos found of that event. The three brothers in this photograph are, from the left, Fred, Mortimer, and Raymond.
